QCoal Group’s Byerwen Coal Project has welcomed the grant of new Mining Leases (ML 70434 and 70436) by the Queensland Government.

The term and conditions of these leases are not what was originally applied for, and while Byerwen proposes to continue development of the Project, the scale and ramp-up are being reviewed accordingly.

“Our team has been working hard over the last few years to reach this milestone and will now start executing plans to enable the next phase of construction for mining operations to commence at Byerwen as quickly as possible,” Mr Wallin said.

QCoal Group has identified Macmahons as the preferred contractor for the mining works for the Byerwen Coal Project. While this decision is subject to commercial agreements, the preferred contractor has been determined to facilitate a timely start-up of these works at Byerwen now that the mining leases have been granted.

QCoal Group will work closely with all contractors and stakeholders to ensure employment and procurement strategies maximise opportunities locally and regionally. More information will become available once contracts have been confirmed and opportunities identified.

Located 20 kilometres west of Glenden in the Bowen Basin, initial civil works and construction of a rail loop have already been completed.
